2014 IForum Kickoff Event - Retrofitting Our Towns!

Join us on Friday, February 28 for our first IForum of 2014. Partnership for Strong Communities, CT Main Street Center and the CT Chapter of the American Planning Association have partnered to present:

Retrofitting Our Towns will explore the question - can we add density, affordabiliy and walk-ability to help municipalities survive and thrive?

Featuring Lynn Richards, EPA Office of Smart Growth

Connecticut’s suburbs expanded enormously in the 1970s, when Baby Boomers in their 20s wanted single-family homes in leafy towns away from the bustle of city and work. Now those Boomers are in their 60s and need smaller homes. So do Millennials, many of them interested in denser living environment and burdened by education debt. And so do working class households who are spending too much on housing in a state with the 6th most expensive median housing costs in the U.S.

But can suburbs and smaller towns reshape and respond to the demographic, economic and lifestyle pressures of the 21st Century? Can car-culture towns reconfigure themselves into walk-able town centers with the features their residents now want?

Come hear one of the nation’s leading experts specifically assess four Connecticut municipalities and offer lessons for all the others. Then hear a room full of planners, economic and community development directors, municipal officials and community leaders respond!

Event approved for 1.50 CM credits for Certified Planners.
