Adequate Housing Is Good for Education

Listen to this commencement speech from Tianna Edward, of Hartford, who graduated from Watkinson School this spring. Connecticut has seen a 50% increase in the number of children living in poverty since 1990, according to the 2014 Kids Count Data Book, just released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

This summer, Tianna is working as a student researcher at Dana Farber Cancer Institute Cancer Immunology and AIDS Department under Dr. Kai Wucherpfennig. To get to where she is today, Tianna had to endure unsafe and inadequate housing. From all indications, she is making a success of herself, but how many children and youth simply can’t overcome their difficult housing situations?
