Best Practices for Counting Youths Who are Homeless

The Urban Institute has published “Counting Homeless Youth: Promising Practices From the Youth Count!”

Knowing how many youth are homeless is a critical first step in providing appropriate services to them, but youths who are homeless are the hidden population. Nine communities across the United States set out to improve their counts through the federal Youth Count! Initiative. The Urban Institute observed their work and compiled promising practices and lessons for improvement.

The Partnership is working with Yale University and the Center for Children’s Advocacy on a Connecticut Runaway/Homeless Youth Study, the results of which should be published in the fall. To read more on that effort, go here.
