Birth Certificates for Homeless Youth

Last legislative session, the Runaway and Homeless Youth workgroup of the Reaching Home Campaign successfully advocated for a bill that allows minors experiencing homelessness to access their birth certificates without the presence of a legal guardian.

The law allows unaccompanied homeless youth access to their birth certificates with the help of a school homeless liaison, a shelter provider or provider to runaway and homeless youth, and will allow unaccompanied homeless youth to access work, healthcare and support services at a time when they have nothing else. Service providers and educators who come in contact with these youth are encouraged to post this flyer in areas where it will most likely be seen by minors who are on their own.
