Confirmation Hearing Held by Senate Committee for HUD Secretary Nominee

 

On June 17, a confirmation hearing for San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, the Obama Administration’s nominee for HUD Secretary, was held by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Current HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan has been nominated for the position of Director of Office of Management and Budget and the Obama Administration has tapped Mayor Castro to take over the position of HUD Secretary.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) reports that members of the Committee asked Mayor Castro about a number of issues related to HUD programs and policies during the confirmation hearing, including:

  • The housing needs of tribal communities
  • The status of the Federal Housing Administration insurance fund
  • Housing finance reform
  • Ending homelessness among Veterans
  • Costs and reform of the Housing Choice Voucher program
  • Community Development Block Grant  Disaster Recovery funds
  • The proposed rule for Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing
