CT Metro Areas Rank High Among Cities with the Most Cost-Burdened Renters

Abodo, an online apartment listing site, reported two Connecticut metro areas, of 19 across the country, have the highest percent of cost-burdened renters (i.e., renters spending more than 30% of their income on housing).

The New Haven-Milford, CT and Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT metro areas were both included on the list, with over half (55%) of renters spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs. In both metro areas, the vast majority of renters (over 85%) earning less than $35,000 are cost-burdened.

While Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk had the highest area median income on the list, one in ten residents earning over $75,000 are cost-burdened. This is the 7th highest percentage on the list for this income bracket. One in 20 New Haven-Milford residents earning over $75,000 are cost-burdened.

The report also surveyed the availability of HUD housing units in those cities.. New Haven-Milford has the second highest percentage of units. Even so, the current supply of these units meets the needs of only 41% of its cost-burdened renters. Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk has sufficient units for just a third of its cost-burdened renters.
