Growing 65+ Population Will Have Significant Challenges Finding Affordable Housing

Center for Housing Policy

By 2050, the 65+ population in America will swell to almost 90 million, more than double what it is now and will account for 1 in every 5 people. Housing an Aging Population: Are We Prepared?, a report by the Center for Housing Policy examines how this growing population will increase the demand for affordable housing, challenge communities to develop affordable housing with adequate services, and ways communities can rise to this challenge.

A few of the main findings of the report:

  • Housing burden increases as households grow older.
  • Almost half of the poorest 65 and older population pay 50% or more of their income for housing.
  • An aging population will develop more health issues and will increase the demand for modified housing with supportive services.
  • Creating more housing choices through flexible zoning policies are important for creating more housing for older adults.
