HELP Committee Approves Workforce Investment Act Bill

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted on July 31 to advance a Workforce Investment Act (WAI) reauthorization bill (S. 1356). WIA authorizes a number of workforce and adult education programs that are integral to helping millions of Americans prepare for the workforce and find employment opportunities.

The Senate bill would authorize Workforce Innovation Funds to identify more effective service strategies for adults and youth as well as require comprehensive planning at state and local levels with a shared approach to performance measurement.

This vote increases the chances that the reauthorization bill will make it to the Senate floor before the year end. WIA is a critical component to keeping people from homelessness and creating a diverse workforce.
