Supportive housing is permanent, independent and affordable housing combined with on‐site or visiting case management and support and employment services. This fact sheet explores how supportive housing works and how it benefits:

• Families and individuals, who are able to live in affordable housing in the community with access to support services that help them manage disabilities such as psychiatric disabilities, chemical addictions, and/or HIV/AIDS.
• Connecticut's cities and regions, who are implementing Ten Year Plans to End Homelessness that include hundreds of supportive housing units as a solution – supportive housing results in improved quality of life and stronger communities.
• The State of Connecticut, which realizes cost savings by avoiding high cost institutionalization and emergency care.
• Neighborhoods in cities where supportive housing exists have experienced increased property values as a result of the investments made in supportive housing.

As you can imagine, the need for affordable housing in Fairfield is dramatic. We have seen how supportive housing has helped stop the cycle of homeless for those at‐risk in our community. Fairfield has had a positive experience with permanent affordable supportive housing, but the need is greater than what organizations like Operation Hope have been able to develop. Supportive housing benefits our town because it helps us fulfill a moral imperative: to do all we possibly can to help our neighbors live rich, independent, rewarding lives as part of a strong community.
