HUD, DOJ, HHS Issue Letter Highlighting Housing Services Eligibility of Immigrants

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

On August 5, 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), published a letter to recipients of federally assisted programs highlighting that immigrants are eligible for “certain housing and services necessary for life and safety.” Providers may not deny an immigrant experiencing homelessness or other traumatic life experiences such as domestic violence or human trafficking access to housing assistance.

The federal agencies reiterated that the information outlined in the letter is already a part of the existing laws and policies approved in 2001 through Attorney General Order No. 2353-2001.
