HUD Housing Report Examines Options for Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

A new report published by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s Office of Policy Development and Research takes a close look at various housing programs available to youth aging out of foster care. All too often these youth face homelessness or housing instability as they age out of government programs. The study includes an in-depth look at the current research and knowledge around the housing needs and barriers for youth aging out of foster care and catalogues various housing programs meant to assist this population.

The researchers examined the Family Unification Program (FUP), conducting an indepth review of the program to understand how it can better serve this population. The study also includes a number of findings regarding existing programs and areas where further research would shed valuable light on what models work best for this population.
