HUD Releases Guidance for Serving Transgender Persons in Shelters

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

On February 20, 2015, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released guidance around appropriately serving transgender persons in shelter. The guidance prohibits HUD-funded programs from asking about gender identity or sexual orientation to determine a person’s eligibility for a shelter stay with shared bedrooms or bathrooms. Clients may still choose to voluntarily self-identify.
