HUD Report: We Don’t Have Enough Affordable Housing

Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Policy Development and Research

The nation needs more affordable housing, even while the country’s affordable housing stock is shrinking, according to a recent paper from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Policy Development and Research.

Research says the answer seems to be coming from preservation, which typically costs just half or two-thirds as much as building new units. This is particularly true in older towns such as Hartford, where nearly 70 percent of the housing stock was built prior to 1939. State, federal and local governments are coming up with innovative ways to finance that preservation.
