Improving Health Care Access for Transgender Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

National Health Care for the Homeless Council

The Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) Clinician’s Network, part of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, has released a report on health care for transgender individuals experiencing homelessness. 1 in 5 transgender people experience or are at-risk for homelessness, yet individuals in this vulnerable population face obstacles accessing shelter and medical care.

Seeing People as They See Themselves: Health Care and Access for Transgender Individuals Experiencing Homelessness outlines the barriers that prevent transgender individuals from accessing health care and offers tips for providers to better serve their needs. Steps for creating an appropriate environment include asking for a patient’s preferred name and delivering trauma-informed care.
