The National Governors Association (NGA) Releases New Guide to Help States Provide Housing to Support Health Care

National Governors Association

The National Governors Association has acknowledged the important role housing plays as an intervention to assist individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability for those who are frequently cycling in and out of the health care system. Housing as Health Care: A Road Map for States provides a summary of supportive housing, including identifying services that are provided to tenants, funding sources and specific case studies of rental subsidies programs. It includes a detailed, step-by-step road map that states can model to help high need and high cost Medicaid patients. The roadmap is broken down into three phases 1) developing housing and services strategy; 2) planning and building capacity; and 3) implementing and evaluating housing solutions.

It concludes by providing some key elements that states may want to understand before embarking in a housing for health approach, such as building partnerships with key stakeholders, understanding Housing First as a model and identifying potential barriers to working with some key partners.
