New ACS Data Reveals More Renters and Higher Rental Costs

National Low Income Housing Coalition

Based on newly released 2013 American Community Survey (ACS) data, the National Low Income Housing Coalition released a quick analysis on renter data.

Both the percentage and number of renters in America has risen over the past year. In 2012 there were 41.9 million renters making up 35.1% of all households. In 2013 the numbers increased to 42.4 million renters making up 36.5% of all households.

The increase in renters has led to a predictable decrease in vacancy rates, while the increased demand has resulted in increase in rent costs. Median monthly gross rent increased from $894 in 2012 to $905 in 2013.
