NLIHC Shares Advocacy Tips for Election Season

National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC)

Recently, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) released its Advocates’ Guide for the Election Season. The guide outlines strategies organizations can use to effectively advocate for affordable housing prior to the November elections.

The guide suggests that advocates:

  • Encourage Members of Congress to endorse spending bills for FY 2017 as soon as possible, which will increase funding for affordable housing.
  • Urge Senators to co-sponsor the expanded Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2016 (S.3237), which not only preserves existing affordable housing but increases investments in Housing Credits.
  • Encourage Representatives to address the housing needs of ex-offenders when making any criminal justice reforms.
  • Join the Make Room campaign, which pledges to send 1 million messages to Congress about the need to end housing insecurity.
  • Use resources provided by NLIHC to encourage candidates to address the affordable housing crisis.

The guide also provides links to websites that provide additional details on the aforementioned affordable housing topics and contact information for people that can assist with the advocacy process.
