Updates to Step Up for Vets Program

A state employment program is expanding to help former military personnel find work.

The armed forces component of the Subsidized Training and Employment Program (Step Up), which has helped more than 1,600 people get back to work, focuses on Veterans and is open to any company of any size. Companies that hire Veterans meeting the program criteria receive a wage subsidy for the six months of the Veteran’s employment.

Step Up was approved by the state General Assembly, and signed into law by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in 2011 as part of the state’s Jobs Bill. The program is administered by the state Department of Labor, and the state’s five Workforce Investment Boards.

Legislation in 2012 expanded the work to Veterans. If an employer (1) has been registered to conduct business in the state for a least 12 months prior to application,  and (2) has paid its state and local taxes on time, then a wage subsidy of up to $20 per hour – or a maximum of $12,000, not including benefits, is provided over a six-month period.

To qualify, Veterans must

  • Have been a member of the armed forces or a reserve component or state National Guard.
  • Have been honorably discharged after serving at least 90 days of service – unless the Veteran was separated from service after a service-related disability.
