Congressional Briefing Explores Issues of Homeless Youth

24 June 2014
National Low Income Housing Coalition

At a Congressional briefing – “Voices of Youth” – youth who have experienced homelessness offered their personal experiences to shed light on contributing factors, challenges and barriers they have faced as a result of their homelessness. The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) reports that the briefing – sponsored by Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and the Congressional Homelessness Caucus – allowed students who have been homeless to reflect upon the factors that contributed to their homelessness.

According to NLIHC, the students also talked about the challenges that homelessness presents for students at primary and secondary schools, while noting that schools offered a respite from their homelessness by providing shelter and food. Access to higher education for youth experiencing homelessness was also discussed, with students noting barriers to obtaining a college degree.
