For more than 200 years, The Hartford has helped people and businesses prepare for the unexpected, protect what is uniquely important to them, and prevail through life’s challenges and opportunities. We know that sometimes those challenges become overwhelming and people find themselves without a safe place to live, struggling to find shelter, food, and employment. In the face of punishing obstacles, maintaining physical and mental health can become increasingly difficult.
Although we continue making progress toward ending homelessness, there are still thousands of people without a home in Connecticut. Nearly a third of the total homeless population in the state is located in the greater Hartford area, with youth and families particularly impacted by these circumstances. There are not enough shelters for youth experiencing homelessness in our area, putting these young people at risk of abuse, prostitution, criminal involvement, and suicide. It is heartbreaking to imagine being on your own at a young age, with no place to stay and few options for assistance.
To help address this critical issue, The Hartford is pleased to continue supporting the work of the Reaching Home Campaign staffed by the Partnership for Strong Communities. We recently announced our latest grant of $25,000 to support the Campaign’s Youth/Young Adult Initiative and the Families Economic Security Initiative. For the past five years, The Hartford has provided funding to ensure the availability of affordable housing and to help end homelessness in our state.
