Blue State Coffee’s philanthropic efforts date back to its inception in 2004, when Drew Ruben had the idea for a community-oriented coffee company. Drew pitched the idea to his parents, Carolyn and Marshall, who helped Drew take Blue State Coffee from an idea to a reality. In 2007, Blue State Coffee opened its first location in Providence, RI. Not only would Blue State Coffee serve quality products, but they also pledged to donate a percentage of sales to local non-profit organizations, minimize their environmental impact, and source their products thoughtfully and locally. Now, more than ten years since the initial thought, Blue State Coffee has 8 locations in Providence, Boston, New Haven, and most recently, Hartford.
Blue State Coffee donates 2% of sales to non-profit organizations. Each cafe has four local non-profits that are supported for a period of six months. Customers are provided a token and encouraged to vote for any of the four supported organizations each time they visit a cafe. At the end of the six-month cycle, the donation is divided between the four non-profits based on the number of votes each one receives. It’s an inventive way for customers to participate and support their communities, and since the donation is divided based on votes, the customer’s choices really do matter and make a difference.
Since opening in September 2015, Blue State Coffee’s café at 777 Main Street in Hartford has supported eight different non-profit organizations, all local to the Hartford area. The first set of non-profit organizations included Our Piece of the Pie, Journey Home, Unified Theater, and the I-Quilt Plan. In July, its second group of causes was selected, including Partnership for Strong Communities, CT Alive, Hartford Food System, and Dream Camp at Trinity College. These non-profit organizations are selected based on the suggestions of customers.
To date, Blue State Coffee has donated over $635,000 to local non-profit organizations across all of its locations. This number continues to grow with each handcrafted beverage, delectable sandwich, and homemade pastry served. We are thrilled to support causes that truly do good within our communities, and we are pleased to announce our support of Partnership for Strong Communities through December.
Come out and join us for a delicious cup of coffee and vote for your favorite non-profit!
