11 April 2016
The National Housing Conference and Children’s Health Watch

The National Housing Conference has released a policy brief, Housing as a Health Care Investment: Affordable Housing Supports Children’s Health.  This literature review by the Children’s HealthWatch examines homelessness, housing stability, and children’s health outcomes. The brief highlights the impact of homelessness on children’s physical and developmental well-being and states that children experiencing homelessness were more likely to be hospitalized.

The brief concludes with suggestions on how policymakers can address the needs of vulnerable families experiencing homelessness.

The proposed recommendations include:

  • Increasing funding for rental assistance programs
  • Developing affordable housing units to meet the needs of families
  • Simplifying access to the housing vouchers programs for families
  • Ensuring families in housing programs have access to supportive services

This brief was funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Children’s HealthWatch.
