A new report by the Campaign for Housing and Community Development Funding (CHCDF) and the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) highlights several studies that explore how affordable housing impacts education, health, and economic outcomes.
- Research has shown that affordable housing reduces the cost burden of renting an apartment and provides households with the opportunity to invest more money and time in their children’s educational development (e.g., college tuition and parent teacher conferences).
- Affordable housing allows households to invest their limited income in healthcare and quality food. Additionally, it can increase the likelihood that children are not exposed to environmental hazards. For example, studies have concluded that low-income children living in HUD-assisted homes have less exposure to lead than those who were unassisted.
- Research has found that the current lack of affordable housing prevents low-income families from accessing economic opportunities, which costs our economy almost $2 trillion in wages and GDP growth.
In addition to highlights from some of the latest research on the topic, the report includes a toolkit to help affordable housing advocates. This toolkit includes factsheets, sample op-eds, best practices, etc.
