The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s new report, A Place to Call Home, discusses the need for increased federal investments in affordable housing. The report comes as President Donald Trump prepared a budget proposal that would include a double-digit cut in funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The report provides an overview of current research on how access to affordable housing helps to support community development and strengthen economic opportunities for low-income individuals and families.
In Connecticut, the report estimates that more than 9,500 jobs were supported through HUD’s investments in 2015. Moreover, federal housing supports have been instrumental in reducing homelessness among Veterans and providing housing assistance to households that are housing-cost-burdened. The report concludes with testimonials from families and communities that have benefitted from federal investments in affordable housing.
