New Research Estimates Shelter Bed Need During COVID-19 Pandemic

25 March 2020

A new report authored by Dr. Dennis Culhane et al "aims to establish the potential mortality and hospitalization costs associated with COVID-19 infection among the homeless population in the United States."

According to this report, when compared to the general population, homeless individuals with COVID-19 are twice as likely to be hospitalized, two to four times as likely to need critical care, and two to three times as likely to die. The report further details the nation’s emergency and observational/quarantine shelter bed need as approximately $11.5 billion for the current year using HUD 2019 PIT and CoC 2019 geodatabase information.
