Helen McAlinden, Director of Homeless Outreach and Development, The Connection
I can’t believe a year has passed since last year’s Annual Reaching Home Dinner! I have fond memories of last year’s event, especially seeing so many people gathered to celebrate the housing work being done in our state. It was such an honor to be in the presence of Governor Dannel P. Malloy, and my fellow awardees Merle Berke-Schlessel of United Way of Coastal Fairfield County; Shumra Chambers and Anastasia Chamiec.
Each year, the dinner seems to brighten the season, allowing the scores and scores of people across our state to come together and honor each other. The mood is amazing! We do hard but oh-so-fulfilling and necessary work and each of us, doing our small part, has created something so much larger than the sum of the parts! The dinner is the place where this wonderful family comes together to truly embrace that collaborative success.
Since last year’s dinner, many of the planned milestones that were discussed are now being achieved through collaboration. I have seen people move from chronic homelessness to housing through the Coordinated Access System. What a pleasure to be part of this transformational work! Kudos to Reaching Home on your ongoing work to prevent and end homelessness in Connecticut and to HOMEConnecticut in your statewide campaign working on creating more affordable housing throughout the state. Congratulations to the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness and to the Corporation for Supportive Housing for your truly inspirational work in our communities.
Special thanks to Governor Malloy for his continuing investment in this mission to end homelessness. We’re looking forward to 2016 and another year of work to end homelessness. The federal budget proposes increased funding for housing vouchers, homelessness resources and public housing. It takes a village to change a society. I think we have created a city!
I look forward to attending this year’s Reaching Home Dinner, celebrate the awardees, converse with my colleagues and commemorate the good work to prevent and end homelessness in Connecticut -- and I pray that you'll all be a part of it.
Please mark your calendars for the June 11th 2015 Reaching Home Celebration Dinner & Housing Awards. This event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell—the same wonderful venue as last year! It will be exciting to see all the work that has been done over the past year. It will be brilliant to hear how the communities are coming together making so much progress with collaboration. It will also be great to hear about the work Opening Doors is doing to end homelessness and will be inspiring to see the most vulnerable getting off the streets to permanent supportive housing.
You can find more information about the awards here.
See you June 11th in Cromwell!
